Overview of Shetland Sheep

Shetland sheep are a distinct breed originating from the Shetland Islands, located to the northeast of Scotland. They are known for their hardiness, adaptability, and high-quality wool.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Shetland sheep are small to medium-sized, with rams typically weighing between 90 to 130 pounds and ewes ranging from 70 to 110 pounds.

  • Coat: They have a double coat consisting of a soft undercoat and a long, fine outer coat, which is highly prized for its quality.

  • Color: The breed exhibits a wide variety of colors and patterns, including black, brown, white, and grey, often with markings.

  • Horns: Rams usually have large, spiral horns, while ewes may be polled (hornless) or have smaller horns. Our are hornless.

Temperament

Shetland sheep are known for their friendly and gentle nature. They are intelligent and can be easily trained, making them suitable for various farming practices. Their calm demeanor makes them a popular choice for both experienced shepherds and beginners.

Wool Quality

The wool of Shetland sheep is one of their most notable features.

  • Softness: It is exceptionally soft and lightweight, making it ideal for fine garments.

  • Durability: The wool is strong and resilient, suitable for a variety of textile applications.

  • Variety: The breed produces wool in a range of natural colors, which is appealing to hand spinners and knitters.

Breeding and Management

Shetland sheep are relatively easy to manage due to their hardiness and adaptability to various climates.

  • Feeding: They thrive on a diet of pasture, hay, and supplemental grain when necessary.

  • Health: Regular health checks and vaccinations are important to maintain their well-being.

  • Breeding: They are known for their good reproductive performance, with ewes typically lambing once a year.

Uses of Shetland Sheep

Shetland sheep are primarily raised for their wool, but they also have other uses:

  • Meat Production: Their meat is considered flavorful and is valued in local markets.

  • Companionship: They can also serve as pets or companion animals due to their friendly nature.

  • Ecosystem Management: Their grazing habits can help manage pastureland and promote biodiversity.
