Ayam Cemani Chicks Available!
Overview of Ayam Cemani Breed
The Ayam Cemani is a unique and exotic chicken breed originating from Indonesia, particularly from the island of Java. Known for its striking appearance and rare qualities, the Ayam Cemani has garnered attention from poultry enthusiasts and breeders around the world.
Physical Characteristics
Color: The most distinctive feature of the Ayam Cemani is its all-black coloration. This includes not only the feathers but also the skin, beak, and internal organs.
Size: Ayam Cemani chickens are medium-sized birds, typically weighing between 4 to 6 pounds.
Comb and Wattles: They have a single comb and wattles, which are also black, contributing to their overall striking appearance.
Genetics
The black coloration of the Ayam Cemani is due to a genetic mutation known as fibromelanosis. This trait causes an overproduction of melanin, resulting in the all-black phenotype. This genetic trait is quite rare and is what sets the breed apart from other chickens.
Temperament
Personality: Ayam Cemani chickens are known to be calm and friendly, making them suitable for backyard flocks.
Social Behavior: They tend to be sociable and can coexist well with other chicken breeds.
Egg Production
While Ayam Cemani chickens are not primarily raised for egg production, they do lay eggs. The eggs are typically medium-sized and light brown in color. However, they are not prolific layers, averaging about 80-100 eggs per year.
