Physical Characteristics

• Color: The most distinctive feature of the Ayam Cemani is its all-black coloration. This includes not only the feathers but also the skin, beak, and internal organs.

• Size: Ayam Cemani chickens are medium-sized birds, typically weighing between 4 to 6 pounds.

Genetics

The black coloration of the Ayam Cemani is due to a genetic mutation known as fibromelanosis. This trait causes an overproduction of melanin, resulting in the all-black phenotype. This genetic trait is quite rare and is what sets the breed apart from other chickens.
